9/10/21: Focus on publication activities

1. Updates:

VJB paper selected for journal. Due Oct. 6 by email reply. See Sept. 8 11:18 am email (https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#search/wmsci/FMfcgzGljlkzzBbjpdJQMtBTvxprnRXs) for instructions. RS will spearhead the submittal process.

MH paper update? It was accepted and now we should only have to wait for it to appear.

PT presentation for conference. He uploaded the video (about 5 min. 40 sec.) to their website yesterday. He played the video for this meeting. Congrats!

PT candidacy exam updates? He will send a revised research plan to the committee. He will email it to us for comments as well.

What is the difference RMSE and SSR or RSS (root mean squared error vs. sum of squared residuals or residual sum of squares)? Discussion. Error is about deviation from the true value, while residual is more about deviation from a predicted value.

Financials status.

As of 6/25/21, PT paid $400 for FTC and the college has agreed to reimburse him for it.

2. Reading and discussion:

Hu et al. 2015, A survey on life prediction of equipment. We did not do any readings today. For next time, we are up to section 3.2.2, item (5), so we can start from there.

---------------------------------------Below are some ideas for future discussion----------------------

We found that the paper at https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-40896-1_3 seems like a good paper for us to read.

MH suggests a short book called Future Spaceflight Meditations, a cosmist perspective, by Jiulio Prisco, physicist formerly with the ESA.

MH suggests Pantelis Koutroumpis, The Productivity Paradox, a report.

3. Background literature update.

Some interesting videos are at the Kartik Gada channel such as  at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuRX67CJhaOT98Jdjh85CEQ which we discussed previously.

For general reference here are some generic questions about articles (and videos):

What is the source?
What is the most significant advance in the human knowledge presented in the paper?
Why is that advance important?
What important questions arise from the paper for future research?
What important questions would it be nice if the paper answered, but does not answer?
What does the paper present that is novel (no one else has provided that before)?
What is the relevance of the paper to our satellite research goals?
Questions from the group?
