AGENDA
AND MINUTES
1. Updates:
- VJB paper. Will be in issue 5 or 6, but no new news.
- MH paper. Still waiting, no changes.
- PT paper. Conference will be Oct. 28-29.
Program: https://saiconference.com/FTC2021/Agenda.
- VJB update. He's doing the half life analysis based on
failures per year, which is the 2nd experiment.
- SD results. Still investigating the data file from
planet4589.
- PT candidacy exam. Met last person and got some advice:
Dr. P. wrote, "I met with [PT] this morning for his candidacy
examination. I think he is very well prepared to start his
dissertation proposal work. [He] has been working with [DB] on
satellite data and forecasting future life expectancy. There is a
growing area of interest in orbit debris (see some samples below)

* https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/news/orbital_debris.html

I definitely approve of [PT]'s work. In particular, I
think if he takes advantage of the growing interest in data science for space
debris and its impact on satellite traffic, he would find some excellent DOD
funding opportunities, a growing community of researchers, and some very good
career opportunities since this is a global problem for anyone interested in
satellite communications."
- Financials.
- As of 6/25/21, PT paid $400 for FTC and the college
has agreed to reimburse him for it after the conference, which is in late
October.
2. Reading and
discussion:
- Hu et al. 2015, A survey on life prediction of
equipment. Last time we finished up to section 5, and this time
we finished the paper. Next time we start on a new paper.
---------------------------------------Below
are some ideas for future discussion----------------------
- We found that the paper at
https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-40896-1_3 seems like a
good paper for us to read.
- MH suggests a short book called Future Spaceflight
Meditations, a cosmist perspective, by Jiulio Prisco, physicist formerly
with the ESA.
- MH suggests Pantelis Koutroumpis, The Productivity
Paradox, a report.
3. Background literature
update.
- Some interesting videos are at the Kartik Gada channel
such as at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuRX67CJhaOT98Jdjh85CEQ
which we discussed previously.
- For general reference here are some generic questions
about articles (and videos):
What is the source?
What is the most significant advance in the
human knowledge presented in the paper?
Why is that advance important?
What important questions arise from the paper
for future research?
What important questions would it be nice if the
paper answered, but does not answer?
What does the paper present that is novel (no
one else has provided that before)?
What is the relevance of the paper to our
satellite research goals?
Questions from the group?
