Meeting 2/23/18

1. Updates on satellite sites:
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_Catalog_Number does contain the recent Tesla car that was fired into space, showing that not just Earth orbiting satellites are included, since this is in a heliocentric orbit.
- https://celestrak.com/satcat/search.asp (e.g., type in "tesla") and https://celestrak.com/satcat/boxscore.asp (see e.g. graph at bottom): VK notes: It seems like the Satellite catalog has the latest information. I tried "tesla" and it shows up.
I saw this link before as the Wikipedia has it on the references. The planet4598 site uses the Satellite Catalog, which has old satellite catalog file compared to celestrak.com. I downloaded the latest Satellite Catalog from celestrak.com.
-  There is similar information acrross planet4589 and celestrak.com, not clear which is using data from the other. They use the same base file satcat.txt.
- UCS uses only has active satellites orbiting earth, this seems a unique characteristic if this source.

2. HA added the Start-Up Space document notes to our overall document.

3. HA plans to provide some notes on http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/01/successful-test-fire-massive-falcon-heavy-rocket-poised-boost-space-science. Note that that article was to some extent superseded by the actual launch, described e.g. in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk%27s_Tesla_Roadster. The car is also now a satellite (of the sun).

4. DB sent HA spreadsheets with some data for his software engineering student team in the course he is teaching. They can write some software to analyze it if they want.

5. Arkansas Academy of Sciences meeting will be at ASU this year.
- Discussed publishability of VK's and RD's results so far. We decided that a presentation would be better than a poster for RS to present.
- A journal paper submittal is due 2 days before the conference. April 4
- Registration and submittals are at http://www.astate.edu/a/ortt/aas/ - Completed registration form, abstract(s), registration fee and membership dues must be received be the deadline of March 11.
- Meeting will be at ASU on April 6-7, 2018
- We need an abstract for Richard so he can register and upload it. We should pass around draafts for us to comment on. Base it on Venkat's and Rohit's reports.
- We need an outline of a paper so we can start filling it in. For DB to start?
- RS needs some draft slides from Rohit and Venkat including figures, conclusions, statement of research problems.
- Lit review: DB should send HA an email with next steps for the lit review.

7. Here is the list of future potential readings: Send updates to DB:https://thehumanraceintospace.blogspot.com/2018/02/list-of-possible-future-readings.html.

8. RD
plans to present his results at the DB/RB joint lab meetings.

Meeting of 2/16/18

Read https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/15/17016208/spacex-falcon-9-launch-starlink-microsat-2a-2b-paz-watch-live for next time. We will discuss it. Included in the discussion will be: How to handle launches where multiple satellites are launched in one launch, in terms of Venkat's metrics? Count launches or count orbiting bodies? This sort of thing has happened before in terms of just a couple or few satellites in one launch, and how are we handling it now?

RD's draft project report: He needs to know he is on the right track and get any guidance necessary, including what to do next. DB will forward it to all concerned.

VK is comparing planet4589 and wikipedia data. He plans to say more next week.

HA sent us a draft of notes on the Start-Up Space document intended for the annotated bibliography. RS and DB need to review and comment so he can add it in.

HA plans to write up his notes on the reading from last week of http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/01/successful-test-fire-massive-falcon-heavy-rocket-poised-boost-space-science and send it to us for comments. Note that that article was to some extent superseded by the actual launch, described e.g. in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk%27s_Tesla_Roadster.  which is also now a satellite (of the sun). Does planet4589 have it? Does Wikipedia? Checking this would be a test of these sites.

DB will send RD's draft to HA and RS.

DB will send HA a spreadsheet with some data for his software engineering student team in the course he is teaching. They can write some software to analyze it.

At the next meeting let us plan to discuss publishability of the student project results.

There is still the list of potential readings:

Meeting of 2/9/18

Discuss update on the reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk%27s_Tesla_Roadster which is also now a satellite. Does planet4589 have it? Does Wikipedia? Checking this would be a test of these sites.

list of readings:

Discuss the article:
   http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/01/successful-test-fire-massive-falcon-heavy-rocket-poised-boost-space-science

Agenda for next week will be:
   Discussion on reading
   Reports

Discussion of  https://brycetech.com/downloads/Bryce_Start_Up_Space_2017.pdf and
https://brycetech.com/downloads/Start_Up_Space.pdf included the notes in the previous post plus the point that, as a leading indicator, the information provided by this source could be used to improve our curve by using it to help calculate the most recent years (which suffer from the problem of a smoothing computation that does not know what future years' data will be). It could also add to discussion about what might be expected for a few years into the future, in addition to extrapolating the curve.

1/26/18 Meeting

For the next meeting:
We will discuss in more detail the following from https://brycetech.com/downloads/Bryce_Start_Up_Space_2017.pdf. HA will then take notes and add this reference to our document.
Table E-1, p. i
Figure 3, p. 13
Figure 4, p. 14
Table 4, p. 18
Table 5, p. 18
Figure 6, p. 19
Figure 8, p. 21
Figure 9, p. 22

Notes from today's meeting:
We discussed: https://brycetech.com/downloads/Bryce_Start_Up_Space_2017.pdf and
https://brycetech.com/downloads/Start_Up_Space.pdf
Some initial notes (DB):
- 2017 report focuses on investment trends. The "trends" idea merits closer attention...
- The focus is on outer space startups, a subset of private space industry
   * However, a defined subset of the problem is a legitimate contender as a proxy metric or component of a hybrid metric
   * It tracks history of private sector investment
      + Table E-1, p. i, summarizes
- Number of new companies per year is an interesting statistic
- The report seems to suggest that private space exploration will become an important contributor in the next several years.
- Fig. 1, p. 4 graphs #of startups per year
- This report should rather dramatically underestimate pursuit of traditional commercial space technologies (e.g. commercial satellite launches)
- Fig. 3, p. 13, graphs amount of investment over time
- Fig. 4, p. 14, graphs amount of investment over time too, but differently and with different results
why the discrepancies between Figs. 3 & 4?
- Fig. 5, p. 15 graphs seed investments (amounts and numbers) over time, but with low resolution
Tables 4 and 5 (p. 18) track investment over time with low resolution
- Fig. 6, p. 19 also graphs investment over time, low resolution
- Fig. 8, p. 21, tracks investment and investor numbers over time with higher resolution
- Fig. 9, p. 22, is similar to fig. 8 but results are diffrerent (need to find out why)
- Fig. 12, p. 24, tracks # angel investors over time, high resolution
- Fig. 13, p. 25 is similar to fig. 12 but for # of venture capital investors
- Figs. 17 & 18 & 20 track number of companies investing, but I think that is not too useful for our purposes
- The 2016 report is the first in the series while the 2017 report updates it.
    * We might consider as potential metrics graphs that were in both reports and so are being reported over time in a stable manner.

VK reported on the data conversion problem he has successfully overcome with the wikipedia data table.
It would be good if he explains this issue in his report, as it was a significant time sink.

RD reported that he will be in town on Monday.

Other readings to consider for future discussion include:

1/19/2018 Readings to consider, etc.

For next time, we will skim, and discuss what parts to read in more detail:

https://brycetech.com/downloads/Bryce_Start_Up_Space_2017.pdf and https://brycetech.com/downloads/Start_Up_Space.pdf which has an earlier publication date, considerable overlap, and may simply be an earlier edition.

VK will report on the data conversion problem he has encountered with the wikipedia data table.
